Frequent Questions

Determining a facility's latitude and longitude

A facility subject to the risk management program requirements in 40 CFR Part 68 must specify its latitude and longitude coordinates in Section 1.5 of the risk management plan (RMP).  What tools are available to accurately determine a facility’s latitude and longitude?

The owner or operator of a regulated facility can use a number of free Web sites to determine the latitude and longitude of the facility, including (but not limited to):

On each Web site, individuals can use a map to locate their facility; the application will then provide the coordinates.  Facilities that use these Web sites should enter the following values in RMP*eSubmit for the fields associated with a facility’s latitude and longitude:

1.5. i.  Lat/Long method: Either I3 (Interpolation – Satellite) or I4 (Interpolation – Digital Map Source) depending on whether the user selects ‘Satellite’ or ‘Map’ in the map tool

1.5. j.  Lat/Long description: The spot on the map that the user selected (e.g., the center of the facility)

1.5. k.  Horizontal accuracy measure (m): 40

1.5. l.  Horizontal Reference Datum Code: 002 – North America Datum of 1983

1.5. m.  Source map scale number: Not required; this information must only be supplied if the user chooses I1 (Interpolation – Map) or I2 (Interpolation – Photo)

Additional information regarding the latitude and longitude fields is available in the RMP*eSubmit Users’ Manual, available at the following URL:
